Journey to Leon the first capital of Nicaragua for over 200 years. Leon was founded by Spanish Captain Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524. Relocated to its current location in 1610 due to volcanic eruptions from Momotombo volcano. Leon Viejo ruins were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000.  Free time for lunch not included in Leon. Enjoy a visit to the museum of the illustrious Nicaraguan renowned international poet Ruben Dario who initiated the Spanish-American literary movement known as Modernismo that flourished at the end of the 19th century. Stopover at the Central Park and visit to Leon’s La Asuncion Cathedral, the largest religious colonial building in Central America.
